Starting a Science project

It is always exciting to start a science project. Some times if we think of it as school work and it doesn’t sound like fun. After all getting an entry for the science fair is not as much fun as having fun doing science experiments. The truth is that work never is fun.

So when you set about starting out any science project, don’t look at it as work. Look at it as a fun experiment that you are going to do with a few friends. That will make the task so much easier and you will enjoy doing it as well. It is far easier to get projects done when you are playing at them rather than working at them.

So before you decide to start a science project sit back and think of things you like to do. Not everyone wants to make a baking soda volcano and built an ant farm. While it might be dangerous to potter around with electricity without the supervision of an adult.

Think of something that you can manage on your own. A little adult help may be needed, but that’s okay. If you are getting stuck for ideas I would recommend that you visit my other site. I am sure that you will find enough ideas to keep you busy for a while there.

The important thing is to have fun. As soon as you begin to enjoy the science project you will do a good job on it. That will hold true for other activities in life besides science projects.

Computers can Aid You with your Project

When the first numerical calculator was invented by Blaise Pascal in 1642, I am sure he never knew the chain of events he had started. From the calculator we got the Charles Babbage Difference Engine and Analytical Engine in the 1830s. The constant innovation of hundreds of people has brought us the laptop today.

The best thing about the computer as we know it today is the vast amounts of knowledge it can share with us. The entire set of Britannica encyclopedias can fit into half a dozen compact discs. Any information you need is at your finger tips if you get on to the internet. In short you have all the help that you could ever need with your project.

What is now important is how you use this knowledge available to you. Do you utilize this wonderful resource to come up with a fantastic science fair project? Or do you just go with some old idea that has been used for a dozen years at the fair before you.

Not only can the computer provide you with information to help you out with your science fair project, it can also help you with your display board presentation. The choice to use this wonderful resource is all yours. Exploit its potential and emerge a winner.

Ideas for Science Projects can come from anywhere

Perhaps because of my extra finely tuned interest in all things related to science I tend to see possible scientific experiments in a lot of day to day things. For instance if I take out a bottle of water from the refrigerator, what do I think? The first thought is about the temperature difference that the water will face. The second is about how it will get warmer in this heat. Then I think about how long it will take to reach room temperature.

Next I wonder what the exact temperature is at that instance. That’s not all, as the droplets of water form on the surface of the bottle I think about condensation. It is the easiest way to prove the existence of water vapor in the air. Then I start thinking about the presence of other gases in the air that we breathe. Maybe even the experiment to prove that oxygen is required for a candle flame to keep burning.

I might go out for a walk and see a science project waiting to be done along the way. I see an empty jar which can be converted into a fountain with the help of a small motor pump. I hear a wind chime and wonder about the resonance of the sounds. Then I think about how that musical sound can be converted into an experiment.

What I am trying to say is that great ideas for a science project can come from extremely mundane every day activities. All you have to do is to keep your eyes and ears open. Explore the world around you in a different light. Once you do have an idea you might want to consider some other aspects of the project. So have fun as you learn more about your world.

Make the Right Choice

While there are a large number of options to choose from for your science fair project, you need to ensure that you make the right choice. It is okay to be confused about this for a while. There is so much data available these days. On the internet itself you will have hundreds of sites booming with ideas. To filter down to a single one can take some time. Here’s a simple method that you can try out.

It is natural that you have some vague idea about the field of science you want to use. Next try and figure out what you would like the project to do. If you want to make a working model get the theory and read up on it. Is it something that you will be comfortable handling? If it is, you have to see how practical it will be to construct.

There is no point in making a huge model that takes up half the room. It can’t be shipped out to school for the science fair with ease. Plus the larger it is the more the chances of something breaking off and making it useless. Ideally the project size should be something that you can personally carry in your arms. If it has to be larger try and make it into two pieces that you can assemble together.

Don’t forget about the display board and the report. Make sure that you finish it well in advance of the date of the science fair. Also try and get part of the project to school the previous day so that you don’t have too much to do on the final day. And whatever else you do make sure that you have fun.

Simple Science Experiments

The whole purpose of a science fair is to learn more science through practical experiments. In order to get into the swing of things for a science fair it is a good idea to pay attention to the workings of science in your daily life. It is not necessary to set up elaborate circuits and expensive equipment to do experiments.

A simple bottle of cold water covered with condensed liquid droplets is also science at work. Freezing different fluids in the fridge can be a fun experiment as well. Especially if the fluids you are trying to freeze are Popsicles of different flavors. It is fun to make ice cubes of different shapes and see how fast they melt.

There is a lot you can do with a pair of magnets as well. By simply using their polarity one can make two simple cardboard cars that attract or repel each other. The north pole and south pole of the magnet create a magnetic field that can be used to propel the cars forward.

There is nothing more fascinating that working with conductors. The thrill of knowing that you were responsible for shooting an electric current in a science experiment is unparalleled. For the early steps into experimentation it is the ultimate high. If you are interested in a simple working model of an Electrical Conductor, check it out.

There’s nothing like doing a simple science experiment with your friends to set the ball rolling for better ideas for the science fair. In time you will realize that the simplest ideas can be the best ones. They are easy to implement. Fun to work on, and guess what? They even win prizes.

Turn Your Project into a Winner

Just consider the time that you spent on all the science experiments that you made before choosing the final project for the fair. I am sure it was quite a fun and adventurous journey till the final product. Now take a look at how it will appear to an outsider. Sure you know what caused that scratch on the surface, but the judge will not.

So once you have your working model you need to pretty it up. If possible slap some paint on to it and spruce it up. Snip away any dangling threads and wires which serve no purpose. Wipe the shiny surfaces clean. In general make it look good.

Now turn your attention to the display board that will be placed next to the project. What all information will it give the reader? Make sure that all the pertinent facts are stated. At the same time don’t crowd it with too much writing. If you are using diagrams, make sure that they are neatly drawn.

If the project is based on a working model of a scientific experiment, make sure you explain it on the display board. If you are using current, make sure you check all the circuits after you set up. Some projects like this one here will need batteries and so make sure you carry them.

Cater for all problems that you might encounter. Then set up the project in your allotted space and sit back to enjoy the fair.

Science Projects around the Home

Do you get stuck in a rut when it comes to science projects? Is it difficult for you to think up of something new, different and interesting to do each year? Or are you tired of carrying the same old projects to school year after year? When science has so many options to offer, why are you limiting yourself to one or two concepts?

Don’t get scared to try out new ideas for your projects. If you choose to work on a different field from others, it will help your project stand out amongst the other science projects on display. Not only will it be a learning experience, you will stand a better chance of winning a prize. Even the judges will appreciate the variety shown by your project.

If you have once built the baking soda volcano, that’s chemistry in action. Think about doing something with biology or physics. It is not that difficult to come up with new projects that involve difference concepts. Biology offers many interesting projects based on living creatures. If flora and fauna are not quite your idea for a project, think along some thing involving physics principles.

What about some experiment with conductor and non-conductors? Or if you are a bit more advanced, think about using electricity. Too scared of current maybe a Fun Airplane would interest you. It is not too time consuming, and will only need some glue and paper to start off.

If you are looking for something cheaper, ask your Mom to give you all the junk lying around the house. Then take a look at the haul and decide what you can fashion out of it. You will be surprised to see the number of science projects this junk can yield. Just start poking around and have fun. That’s what the spirit of science is all about.
